Distant, Leslie walks by, pondering some very important matters. (Namely, that new program on the BBC. Scintillating, really.) Casual, he pauses for a moment, shrugs visibly, and sidles over to the keeping-place of the professor's notebook. He reveals it, and smugly leafs through, checking out the latest updates...

Faeries. A few sentences in, and the ego starts to take off. First, he smiles and shakes his head. The casual observer can witness his posture straightening and a coy, one sided smile spreading laterally across his big stupid head.

Just as he opens his mouth to bring attention to this story about the fey, and how *obviously* interesting it is to him, and should be to all within earshot; Leslie's words get caught in his throat.

"Urgkh-"

All color drains from his face. Mischief turns to resolve. He continues to read, but this time the book is very close to his nose. Behind the pages, his eyes are wide at first, and then they squint some. He looks afraid. Angry? Some time passes, and he finishes with the notebook. He puts it back and crosses his arms.

"So that'll be your motive, then." He says, to no one in particular. His face is still pale, but his voice sounds like sunburn.

…be on to something, but I can’t be certain. I have slain fourteen wendigo in my time and countless more were slain by my father before me. With luck, I hope never to slay another.

The Second of June, nineteen hundred seven
The people here are ignorant. I believe we can cure the hunger, cure the wendigo. The people here insist I euthanize them as I have always done. I can’t sleep at night. Whether I awake or sleep, I see faces of the wendigo, tied, burning at the stake, by my own hands. I can incinerate their bodies, to burn the wendigo spirits from their hearts and kill them. But I can’t cure them of the spirits alive. Not yet, I need to keep working. But I have created a Fetish that can hold a wendigo spirit temporarily. I believe a ritual will be involved. I’ve tested the incantation using words the wendigo fear like heat and fire, and have taken the spirit from Peter. But when I tried to burn the fetish with the spirit inside, the spirit did not die. It fled and returned to Peter. I will need to create another fetish. Bigger, this time. And try something else.

The twenty seventh of July, nineteen hundred seven

Nasheykmingaan has just left after a visit, perhaps to return in a month’s time. I believe he thought me going mad. But I have returned to mu work. I have made no progress to cure my brother. And he is worse by the passing days. He no longer understands the reason I must detain him and he fights with me now to stay contained in the cage in the corner. I am afraid. I do not feed him, yet he becomes stronger. I do not give him drink, yet the room is frigid cols, as if he were made of ice. I have captured several wendigos Peter previously infected and I have tried the ritual again without setting the fetish aflame. This time, It worked. My brother and the others were themselves for a few minutes but then the spirits broke from the fetish and returned to their original host’s bodies that have hosted wendigo before.

The Thirtieth of July, nineteen hundred seven

I have observed something of note in my brother and the other wendigo I have detained here in my hut. The wendigo appear to be subservient to Peter as if he is like an alpha among them. I have never witnessed this behavior among wendigo in the wild. They are ordinarily independent with occasional competition over food. Is it possible that while under duress, the wendigo spirit naturally align beneath the spirit that infected them as if it were their leader? I will not kill my brother but--- but what would happen to the lesser wendigo if the alpha was eliminated?

Today I tried to explain to Peter my theory in replacing the heart. He reached through the cage and grabbed me. His strength was inhuman. He broke my arm like a child snaps a twig. I broke free but I was bitten on the shoulder. His teeth were like the fangs of an animal and he licked at my blood on his mouth and lips for hours. He will not stop screaming for more. I fear he will alert the tribe to our location. But I cannot kill him unless I burn his heart, Else the unyielding hunger shall heal his wounds and revitalize him. But so too, I cannot stand to see my brother in agony, if I should set him aflame…
What do I do?

I am treating my wound, but it may be infected. The autumn begins very cold

The Twelfth of September, nineteen hundred seven
Peter has become insatiable for flesh. I have had cravings. I fear the worst. But I can conclude this. A man becomes the cannibal wendigo in two ways. Firstly, when a wendigo is murdered, is unable to heal its wounds and it’s ice heart is not burned to ash, the spirit shall be expelled from the perished heart and seek out a new human vessel at random. Secondly, a new wendigo spirit is birthed when a wendigo feeds on a human victim. But cannot finish its feast and the victim survives. This appears to be my cause. My father would be ashamed

The twenty fifth of September, nineteen hundred seven

It worked. I could not transfer my own spirit while performing the ritual, but with the fetish, I could transfer the spirits of the wendigo into the fetish and before the spirits could flee back to their original hosts, I finished the ritual I made using words and symbols they feared. My assumptions were correct.
The four spirits in the fetish went together to the Alpha wendigo, My brother, the wendigo who infected them many moons ago. The others did not survive the transfer. For their human bodies were starved for years and the hunger no longer kept them alive. If I had more time, I believe I could have recreated the ritual and redirected the wendigo spirits of the fetish into any vessel of my choosing. My instincts say this would go willingly only into a body a wendigo has once possessed, however. But I do not have time to focus on this. I need to find a way to cure Peter and myself. With several spirits inside of him, Peter worsens ever faster and so have I.

The Twenty sixth of September, nineteen hundred seven
They are coming for me. They will put me on trial and blame me for the murders Peter committed when the spirit took him. They will discover what I am becoming. I can’t let them find out. I need to throw them off track. I need to find the cure. I need more time. I don’t feel the cold anymore.

The Twenty ninth of September, nineteen hundred seven

I have burned down my hut and the wendigo inside. But I am a coward, and I did not stay within. I saved my journals and I will bury them for my own son to find. The tribe will be here soon. But I need more time. Forgive me Peter. In your memory, I will find the cure.

"The Kobald, occasionally Cobald, is a sprite stemming from German mythology and surviving into modern times in German folklore. Although usually invisible, a Kobald can materialize in the form of an animal, fire, a human being and a candle. The most common depictions of Kobalds show them as human-like figures the size of small children. Kobalds who live in human homes wear the clothing of peasants; those who live in mines are hunched and ugly; and Kobalds who live in ships smoke pipes and wear sailor clothing. Legends tell of three major types of Kobald. Most commonly, the creatures are house spirits of ambivalent nature; while they sometimes perform domestic chores, they play malicious tricks if insulted or neglected. In some regions, Kobalds are known by local names, such as the Galgen-Männlein of southern Germany and Heinzelmännchen of Cologne. Another type of Kobald haunts underground places, such as mines. A third kind of Kobald, the Klabautermann, lives aboard ships and helps sailors. Kobald beliefs are evidence of the survival of pagan customs after the Christianization of Germany. Belief in Kobalds dates to at least the 13th century, when German peasants carved Kobald Effigies for their homes. Such Pagan practices may have derived from beliefs in the mischevious Kobalds of ancient Greece, the household Laeres and Penates of ancient Rome, or native German beliefs of a similar room spirit called Kofewal.

Kobald beliefs mirror legends of similar creatures in other regions of Europe. And scholoars have argued that the names of creatures such as Goblins and Kabouters derive from the same roots as Kobald. This may indicate a common origin for these creatures, or it may represent cultural borrowings and influences of European peoples upon one another. Similarly, subterranean Kobalds may share their origins with creatures such as gnomes and dwarves and the aquatic Klabautermann with similar water creatures."

A Dwarf (old Norse dvergr, old English dweorg, old High German twerg, proto-german *đwerȝaz) is a certain kind of invisible being in the pre-christian mythology and religion of the norse and other german peoples. No one really knows what the word “ Dwarf” and its cognates originally meant, but there’s no indication that it had anything to do with a small stature, a characteristic which is never mentioned in ancient descriptions of these beings.

The dwarves are pitch-black in appearance and live underground in Svartálfaheim, a place which was probably thought of as a labyrinthine complex of mines and forges.
The dwarves are most often noted for being extremely skilled smiths and craftspeople. Among the many irreplaceable treasures created by them are: Mjölnir , the hammer of Thor; Gleipner, the chain that bound the wolf Fenrir when all other fetters failed; Skíðblaðnir, a ship which belongs to Freyr and always had a favorable wind; Gungner, the spear of Odin; Draupner, a ring owned by Odin; the Brísingamen, a magnificent necklace owned by Freya; and the long, golden hair of Sif, Thor's wife. They're also extremely knowledgable, wise and magically powerful. They turn to stone if exposed to the rays of the sun.

Four dwarves, Austri, Vestri, Norðri and Suðri, (“East”, “West”, “North” and “South”) hold aloft the four corners of the sky, evidencing their colossal strength.
The lines between the dwarves, elven, and dead humans are very blurry. The dwarves are occasionally called “Black elves” (old norse Svartálfar), and in some instances ther're described as being dead or resembling human corpses.

" The So-called "first world"(or world-age) was apparently destroyed by fire -- possibly some sort of volcanism, asteroid strike, or coronal mass ejected from the sun. The second world was destroyed by ice -- Ice age glaciers or a pole shift. During these two global cataclysms, the virtuous members of the Hopi tribe were guided by an odd-shaped cloud during the day and a moving star at night that led them to the sky god named Sotuknang, who finally took them to the ant people -- in Hopi, Anu sinom. The ant people then escorted the Hopi into subberranean caves where they found refugea and sustenance. In this legend the ant people are portrayed as generous and industrious, giving the Hopi food when supplies ran short and teaching them the merits of food storage. In fact, another legend says that the reason why the ants have such thin waists today is because they once deprived themselves of provisions in order to feed the Hopi. Round kiva in New Mexico, built by descendants of the ancient Hopi the constellation Orion also has a thin waist. When Orion dominates the winter skies, the ants are deep in their small underground hills. These structures are similar in form to the Hopi Kivas, which are subterranean communal prayer chambers. Coincidentally the Sanskrit word Ki means "ant hill" and Va means "dwelling." Inside their Kivas the Hopi perform the bean sprouting ceremony, or bean dance, called Powamu. During this time the fires are continuously kept ablaze, turning these structures into super hot houses. The ritual commemorates a time when the Anu sinom taught the Hopi how to sprout beans inside caverns in order to survive. Hopi rock carvings of the ant people, northern Arizona the ant people may have also lived in ancient Egypt. Akhenaten, the 18th dynasty pharaoh who ruled from 1351-1334 BC, is shown in some depictions with an elongated skull like the shape of an ant's head. His almond-shaped eyes and neck are like the ant's, and either the serpent or the vulture on his ureaus resembles the ant's mandibles. He also has spindly arms and legs like those of the ant, and his upper body resembles the ant's thorax while his lower body mirrors the ant's abdomen. Akhenaten's body type can be specifically compared to the pharaoh ant (Momomorium pharaonis), which originated in west Africa. It also has an elongated head, a yellow to reddish brown body, and a darker abdomen with a stinger. Perhaps it is more than a coincidence that the Egyptian word Sahu means "stars of orion," whereas the Hopi word Sahu means "star," the most important of which are those in the constellation Orion.
