LARP suggestions

Postby Tesla » Fri Oct 24, 2014 4:07 pm

Ok, I'm considering joining a second LARP. I do love Occam's Razor, but I'm thinking I can fit a second one on my schedule.
This is everyone's chance to stump for their (other) favorite LARP.
What I'm looking for/interested in
1) It shouldn't conflict with Occam's Razor ( too much. I know it's impossible to avoid some conflicting dates)
2) I'd prefer something new. A game that just started this year or will start next year. I'd rather be there at the beginning instead of jumping into the middle.
3) Modern, future, post apocalypse prefered. I'd like to try a Gun slinger out..

I've heard about Fifth Gate a little and I almost joined Clockwork Skies before I decided on Occam's.
Let me know what you think here or in PMs

Avoid Clockwork Skies. All of the issues that they had at The Calling have been magnified, aside from their poor system.

Someone else can vouch differently, and I don't mean to sound vindictive, but the game isn't run well at all.

Fifth Gate is Post-Apocalyptic and starts in 2015, but doesn't have any guns. Clockwork Skies (Steampunk) and Shadows of Amun (Historical Fiction meets Cthulhu and Time Travelling?) both have guns but didn't start within the last year.

I would shamelessly plug Crossover, however, which is starting in 2016. It is a high fantasy game, but it is a high fantasy game which has characters crossing over from modern-day Earth in a Narnia-esque fashion. There are other races which will have crossed over, including one hyper-advanced race. Guns will be prevalent (we expect). (Disclaimer: I'm plot staff for Crossover, hence the shamelessly plug comment)
If this is to end in fire
Then we should all burn together
Watch the flames climb high into the night
Calling out for the rope, sent by and we will
Watch the flames burn on and on the mountain side hey

Shameless plugging is perfectly fine, Alice. :)
And if you know of a great LARP, mention it. Even if it doesn't match my preferences, you may spark someone else's interest.

Terres Rising is really really fun. They players are great and I love to NPC there because they're all great to hang with. Accelerant credit for NPCs, though they're not exactly an accelerant game. Adam (Mason) is staff there and he does a phenomenal job. I don't know a whole lot about the system, but it's fantasy.

I will speak up on behalf of Clockwork Skies, they had some kinks in the start of their LARP (who doesn't?) but I've been a PC since Day one there and I enjoy the game a lot.

The second game of Steam and Cinders (http://www.be-epic.com/) started this autumn. It is a Victorian era steampunk / weird west game set in a colonial town on a newly discovered continent. It runs in Mashpee, MA and is very Nerf-friendly. It also has a very complex and rewarding Between Game Profession system for people who want to take the time and effort.

It is also a little bit of as much a fashion show as it is a LARP, but it is trying hard to move towards a low sci-fi, heavy steampunk horror LARP. The rules are functional, but non-Accelerant. Main differences are no flurry rule, and a limited Refresh system.

Alternatively, Be Epic's other boffer LARP is Second Dawn, which is a post apocalyptic science fiction game set two hundred years after the bombs were dropped. Heavily influenced by Fallout, Fading Suns, and Gamma World. Nerf friendly, but rather weird. HATE the campsite, but if you are familiar with Camp Denison, then you may also know why.

Future Imperfect is what currently satisfies my sci-fi cravings, if you're at all interested. And hey, it's a super gun-heavy game!
