If you want to try using cloth to cover a thrown weapon use nylon. It's what a lot of people use on melee weapons, myself included. Cotton will not only absorb water and retain the weight of it, the damp fabric will stretch & flop. Beyond that cotton will snag on just about anything. A few brushes with tree branches will start to rip the fabric rather quickly. The nylon is smoother and glances off surfaces, including people, much softer than cotton or duct tape. Plus it's slightly water resistant to begin with.

If you do end up going the duct tape route, here's a sneaky trick to extend the life of your open cell foam:

Saran Wrap (or other thin kitchen cling film)

Wrap your open cell foam with Saran Wrap, making sure not to compress it. Then apply your tape. This will mean that the tape sticks to the plastic film, rather than the foam. This prevents those ugly tape-stuck-to-itself wrinkles that sometimes show up when an open cell foam object compresses. Just make sure when you're poking holes in the tape to make sure you're also poking holes through the film. Works great on thrusting tips too!

Oh, snap, good advice, Garrett. I think I'm going to try the nylon route, and if that fails duck-tape it is (I'll ditch the cotton). And I'll ditch the hatchet idea. I don't know why I have such a love for damn hatchets.

James, this is also clutch advice, as I want to replace the thrusting tips on my two boffers before the next game fore the very reason you've mentioned.

The next step is to continue searching for a reliable over-the-shoulder boffer sling. I've got some yoga-mat bags coming from Amazon, and if those fail, I'm going to dismantle some pants into a sling.

I've found over the years that over the shoulder slings & scabbards for boffers just don't work well. They can be difficult to pull unless you have gorilla long arms. They tend to flop back & forth unless you secure them at the bottom, which makes them harder to draw from. It also takes longer to get them into ready position than if they are at the hip. It really have your heart set on over the shoulder mounting just use 2 large steel O-rings. Mount 1 behind your shoulder & the other at your waist. A simple belt & shoulder strap type harness will work. Just make sure the rings have enough of a loose mounting to the belts that they lay flat after you draw.

I'm with Garret on the over the shoulder slings. They work decently for shorter weapons (36 in for me and I"m 6') but anything longer starts to force storage contortions to get them out even if they're just a ring. The few i have seen that do work are actually laced together and a tug opens them up so you can flick the weapon out rather than needing to draw it (sorta like the over shoulder sheaths you see in some movies, i.e. 13th warrior). I have been pondering the use of a strong magnet to hold a weapon in a similar flick out fashion but I worry about it's interactions with any electronics or large pieces of metal I lean against. A piece of cloth tied to the blade and hilt with slip knots works well but will take some effort to retie after your done. Plus, you'll need to untie it from both ends before it's really useable and not a tangling risk. In all honesty, most long swords were drawn from the hip to maximize the distance your arm can pull it out without torquing your body and it works. Plus, as someone who likes to be able to roll if he falls, I worry about back sheaths leading to snapped weapons.

At 6'3", I fortunately have some gorilla arms :), however, I've also considered something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Cosmos-Durable-Ca ... +mat+sling

As well.

I've though about doing he rings (I saw a few guys at AD2 that had them), but my boffers don't have any guards/hilts, so I'd have to add them. And really, I'm not actually so focused on trying to _draw_ the weapons even, just to carry them. I've got a rifle on sling that I can secure to my chest, so I would just need to be able to drop the boffer-case and then get them out. I subscribe to the Link system of CARRY ALL THE GEAR.

So, if you just want to carry them, the simple side sash is traditional. :p Alternatively, tie a loop of cord or leather near the top of the hilt and hook it to a carabener on a belt loop. It is a bit tricky to draw fast since the cord can catch in the little nock that secures the clip but it seems to work fine as a easy carry. It's what I"m planning to use for my one hander. Cheap and easy.

I tried a few 'side sash' (I assume) methods during the ADs, to little effect. Since my boffers don't have any cross-guards, keeping them on loops on my hip/belt didn't workout so well, and with two (a long and a short), flopping around all-scissor like seems to be a problem (hence the 'scabbard' of a yoga-mat bag).

I did see a few folks that had what amounted to a sheath on their hips with 2 boffers stuck inside, and that was somewhat unwieldy. Last time around, I had mine stuck in a holster and slung over my shoulder on a belt, but it wasn't quite stable enough.

My current line of thought is to use something like the above linked yoga-mat strap. I tested this with some elastic loops and a belt the other day, and it worked pretty well. I just want to compare it to a more fitted sheath or sling.

I subscribed to the same school of though. In Endgame I could carry 2 Nerf rifles, 2 sidearm pistols & a short/ long club combo hands free. A tac-vest with a shoulder lanyard for the primary rifle, sling over the back for secondary, drop-leg holster for standard pistol, cell phone quick release clip for holdout pistol & leather sword frog on the left side if the belt for the boffers. Both hands completely free the whole time I didn't need to have a weapon active.
I would say your easiest method would be to put small cross guards on the boffers & mount or slide the steal rings to your belt. A scabbard on the belt can sometimes get caught on things as you run through the woods. Which can make you day not particularly great at times.
