The forums are a good resource to get a feeling for characters. If you enjoy that sort of thing (I do), online roleplay can be a great place to allow your character to 'breathe', to develop a feeling for other characters, and also to establish who your character is. I have never played a game with people who are so good at establishing character - both online and also when game is on. In-game I haven't met anyone who has shut down a question of 'who are you and what do you do?' - but, maybe that's because I'm fairly good at demanding overtly and/or covertly interaction with others.
Even if you are shy - or your character has 'issues' (which, of course, *none* of us do) - just plant yourself close enough to a group of people and you are bound to hear great stuff. We're all so new to this 'world' that we are openly exploring each other as well as expressing who we are as we try to find where we fit.
